This bill allows the military pay raise, which was proposed by President Joe Biden. It was proposed by the president as a 4.6% increase on March 28, 2022.
President Biden announced his budget proposal for the Fiscal Year 2023 on March 28, 2022, and this release included a 4.6% pay raise for both military and civilian personnel. Now, all eyes are on the Senate for the next move.
You need to keep in mind that this is just a proposal and the pay raise is not guaranteed yet. Senate must also vote and this rate may be lower or upper than the proposed rate. It is worth noting that the military enjoyed a similar pay raise, which was 4.6% again, back in 2007. It was just a year before the financial crisis. On the other hand, the United States did not have to deal with any inflation levels since the 70s. Thus, this raise will be quite helpful to many personnel.
Some resources also state that a higher raise may be approved by Congress. In May, the inflation rate was 8.6% and it reached the highest level since 1981. Thus, the current proposed pay raise rate will not help the personnel at all since their living costs have already increased by more than 8%.
Of course, to provide a higher pay raise, the defense budget has to be increased. This has also a slim chance because the government is trying to put everything on the line, especially in an economic sense, within the country first.
We hope that the senate will surprise everyone and accepts a higher pay raise. Otherwise, the United States federal and military employees will continue to resign and prefer similar positions in the private sector.
