Tax-exempt forms for the 2024 tax season can be found in the rest of the article for free in PDF format so you can print out a paper copy and mail it to the Internal Revenue Service.
Before finding out if you or your organization is tax-exempt, you must figure out what type of tax-exempt status you want to claim.
Depending on your organization status, file the following tax forms for tax-exempt status.
Social Welfare Organizations
A social welfare organization is a nonprofit organization that is exempt from tax under Code Section 501(c)(4). An organization that is not organized for profit but promotes social welfare is considered a social welfare organization. Since this is a nonprofit, these types of organizations are tax-exempt.
These types of organizations must file Form 1024-A—Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(4) of the IRS. Form 8976 also must be filed which will notify the IRS in your intents to operate under Section 501(c)(4).
Form 8976 can be submitted electronically and there is a way to fill out a paper 8976 and mail it to the IRS. To file Form 8976 electronically, you must register to the Form 8976 Electronic Notice Registration System.
Charitable, Educational and Religious Organizations
Charitable, educational, and religious organizations are tax-exempt under Code Section 501(c)(3). To be tax-exempt, organizations must file Form 1023 but may be eligible to file the easier version of it—1023—EZ. Figure out whether or not you’re eligible to file Form 1023-EZ for charitable, educational, or religious organizations using the Eligibility Worksheet.
Other Nonprofit or Tax-Exempt Organizations
Any tax-exempt organization that doesn’t fall under the above categories must file Form 1024. These organizations are under Section 501(a). Therefore, the Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(a) must be filed.
Regardless of the tax form you file, there are state registration requirements. The easiest state registration process is in Florida, Georgia, Michigan, NY, Ohio, PA, and Texas. The NASCO provides what you need to do for each state as far as the registration of tax-exempt status.
Below, you can find each form in fillable PDF (printable).
Form 1023 can only be filed electronically through pay.gov and it’s free to file.
