Social Security Verification Letter

Social Security verification letter or known as a benefits letter is the proof for Social Security benefits you receive or that you’ve never received benefits.

Although this is titled as a letter, you aren’t required to mail a “letter” to the Social Security. You can simply follow the steps listed below to request verification letter.

Step 1: Log in to your My Social Security account.

Step 2: On your account, select Get a Benefit Verification Letter.

Step 3: Click on “Customize Your Letter”.

Step 4: Select what you want to include in your letter and print out a paper copy. You can also save it as PDF to keep it in an electronic format.

Why get a Social Security verification letter?

You may be asked for a Social Security verification letter for a number of reasons. The most reasons why you may need to provide a verification letter include:

  • Mortgage or loan applications
  • Subsidized government aid
  • Applying for a new benefit from a government agency other than Social Security

The Social Security verification letter works as a summary of what benefits you have received. So, you will know exactly how much you received in Social Security benefits. This will show you benefits received from retirement, disability, Medicare, Social Security, and Supplemental Security Income.

A verification letter will also show that you’ve never received any benefits.
