Real ID Deadline

The Real ID Act became law in 2005, establishing minimum security standards for state-issued identification cards. The Real ID deadline had been October 2020 but was postponed numerous times because of delays in processing and the coronavirus pandemic. A real ID is a driver’s license or identification card that meets federal standards for security. It’s required for travelers 18 and older to board domestic and commercial flights and enter certain federal buildings and military bases.

Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005 to enact the 9/11 Commission’sCommission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “”set standards for the issuance of sources of identification.”” This law establishes minimum security standards for state-issued driver’sdriver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits federal agencies from accepting those licenses and cards from states that do not meet those standards.

Who Must Have Real ID?

Beginning May 7, 2025, all travelers who want to enter federal buildings, travel on a federally regulated commercial flight, or enter a nuclear power plant will need to present a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card. If you don’tdon’t have a real ID yet, you can apply for an optional REAL ID now by visiting your local driver’s license agency.

In addition to your real ID, you will need to bring proof of residency, such as a current Pennsylvania license or photo ID card, PA vehicle registration, auto insurance, or utility bill with the same name and address. You may also need additional documentation, depending on your citizenship.

If you’re not required to have a Real ID, you can still use a standard driver’s license or identification card as proof of identity. However, if you’re traveling abroad, you should always have your passport.

To comply with the new requirements, people must visit a local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and provide at least their social security number, two forms of proof of address, and lawful status. The DMV will also verify that a person is eligible for a Real ID-compliant document, including those who may be considered high-risk by the agency, such as seniors or victims of domestic violence.
