New Jersey Food Stamps
The New Jersey food stamps program, also known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), helps households buy healthy foods. It is the largest domestic hunger safety net program.
NJ SNAP, formerly Food Stamps, helps low-income families buy groceries with an Electronic Benefits Transfer card that’s accepted at most grocery stores and some farmers markets. Eligibility is determined by a number of factors, including income and assets. Most households with gross income up to 185% of the federal poverty level, or $3,833 per month for a single mother of two, qualify for SNAP benefits.
How to Apply for NJ SNAP?
The NJ SNAP application process can be complicated and may require the assistance of a professional. Community Foundation of New Jersey’s Resource Access team can help you complete the application and submit all necessary documents. If you are in need of SNAP benefits, the team can schedule an in-person appointment at your local county board of social services or assist you over the phone.
You can apply for SNAP online through the NJOneAPP Website or download and complete a paper application. Once your application is received, the agency will schedule an interview with you. Depending on the program(s) you appear to be eligible for, you may be seen the same day or be given an appointment within 5 business days.
If you do not have a computer or reliable internet connection, you can still apply for SNAP by calling the county board of social services. You will be asked to submit proof of your income and household size. CFBNJ’s Resource Access team can help you collect and submit the necessary documentation.
Once your application is received, a food stamp/SNAP worker will conduct an interview to determine your eligibility. If you are unable to attend an interview in-person, you can request a home or telephone interview. Generally, interviews are held within thirty days of receiving your application. Once your eligibility is determined, you will receive your SNAP benefits on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card.

Typically, the benefits do not cover the cost of all household members’ needs, but they can help with some essentials like milk, cereal, fruit and vegetables, canned fish and soup, and other products that are low in fat. SNAP benefits are available for New Jersey residents who meet the requirements.
Besides meeting the minimum income level, applicants must be US citizens or legal aliens and agree to participate in an employment training program. Applicants must provide proof of citizenship and identity and have Social Security numbers for all members of their households. They must also have a valid mailing address and a current phone number. They may also have to submit other supporting documentation, such as a pay stub, eviction notice, or utility bill.
