Colorado E-Bike Rebate Program Opens For Applications
Colorado is ready to launch one of the country's largest e-bike rebate programs. Starting in mid-August, income-qualified residents will be able to apply for a voucher that can be used at participating retailers.
The Community Access to Electric Bicycles Rebate Program allows Colorado residents with limited incomes to get a discount on a new e-bike. The program was first launched in 2022 when the state legislature earmarked $12 million for a range of e-bike programs. The Colorado Energy Office (CEO) will soon open the first round of applications for the state’s e-bike rebates. Interested residents can register for the program during scheduled online registration events using the rebate application portal. Thorne said they will be randomly selected for a rebate once the registration window closes Aug. 21. The program hopes to get more people on e-bikes, reducing emissions and improving health.
The vouchers can be redeemed at more than 100 local bike shops, including Lectric eBikes, which is the official provider for the state rebate program. Residents can also use their vouchers to order a Lectric eBike online or over the phone and have it delivered to their homes. The program is designed to run until the $6.6 million allocated for this round of funding runs out. Starting April 2024, the state will offer a similar program for all residents regardless of income level, minus the voucher requirements and cap.
Eligibility Criteria
The program is open to all Colorado residents over the age of 18. Applicants must be a family household member, meaning that all members share the same address and financial records. Those who earn below 80% of their area median income (AMI) qualify for the lowest rebate level, while those who earn between 80 and 100% of AMI qualify for a higher rebate level. People earning below 80% of their area median income (AMI) can qualify for up to $1,100 toward the cost of an e-bike, while those above 80% of AMI are eligible for a smaller $450 rebate. E-bike accessories such as helmets and locks are also eligible for rebates under both levels of the program.
Colorado’s e-bike rebate program is an important tool to encourage more people to use bikes for transportation. However, it’s not the only way to save on a new e-bike. E-bikes are available at many local bike shops across the state, and purchasing a new e-bike from a locally owned-shop is a great way to support your community.
Local bike stores are able to offer more competitive pricing on e-bikes than online retailers because they don’t have to factor in shipping costs. In addition, buying from a local retailer supports local business growth and economic development.
