The back to school season shopping includes not only school supplies but clothing, computers, and other things that students need. While many of these items are subject to around 4 to 8 percent sales tax, the tax free weekend eliminates this for certain items for up to a certain amount. Illinois
The Illinois sales tax holiday, will help Illinois families get back to school supplies at a discounted rate. This 10-day period, from August 5 to August 14, will save shoppers 1.25% on the price of qualifying items.
For instance, teachers can receive an income tax credit of up to $250 for classroom supplies. There are also unique back-to-school sales tax reduction weekends at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Marshalls, and Dillard’s.
Illinois’ 10-day sales tax holiday is part of the state’s $1.8 billion tax relief bill. It was part of the $46.5 billion budget approved by Pritzker in April.
According to the National Retail Federation, a recent survey found that local parents spend an average of $886 on school supplies for their kids. That’s $346 more than the national average, but it’s still well under the $10k mark.
