Indiana Child Support Guidelines

In Indiana, child support payments are determined by a set of specific guidelines. These guidelines are designed to meet children’s mental, physical, and financial needs while also considering both parents’ incomes. To calculate Indiana Child Support, each parent must submit a Child Support Obligation Worksheet to the court. Once the incomes of both parents are established, a formula is used to determine which parent should pay how much. A judge reviews the final order and can deviate from it when necessary. In general, however, a judge orders the guideline amount unless there is evidence that it doesn’t provide for a fair share of the child’s needs.

The guidelines also consider the expenses of both parents, including health insurance and other expenses that may not be included in the state’s basic support formula. These include childcare, extraordinary costs, and college expenses. Unlike alimony, child support payments are usually tax-deductible for the payor and not taxable for the recipient. Most child support orders continue until the child turns 19. The court can extend an order if the child has extraordinary or special needs.
