1040X Form 2021—Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. File Form 1040X to amend a previous year’s tax return. Amending a tax return means correcting mistakes on a previous tax return.
In a situation where the mistakes found on tax return resulted in overpaying or underpaying taxes, Form 1040X is used for correcting these mistakes. In our previous article, we broke down whether or not you should amend a tax return. Read it from here before filing an amended tax return.
You can treat your Form 1040X—Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return the same way as your federal income tax return. The only difference is you will file it to correct the mistakes made on a previous return. You can also file Form 1040X if you missed a credit on your tax return. Since this may result in a higher tax refund if the credit is refundable, you will also have the option to calculate your new refund amount.
On Form 1040X in the 2021 tax season, enter the changes along with the corrected tax forms and schedules. If you’re filing Form 1040X due to an error on a tax form or schedule, filing it shouldn’t take too much of your time.
The same as the Form 1040 you filed earlier for that tax year, you will figure out the taxes owed and your refund. If you’re filing Form 1040X because you underpaid your taxes, you can pay it online through the IRS Direct Pay. You can also pay with a credit card or debit card online but we suggest sticking with the Direct Pay as you won’t pay any late fees or interest.
Filing Form 1040X – Mailing Address
Form 1040X cannot be filed electronically. Therefore, a paper Form 1040X must be filed and mailed to the IRS. Although you are going to mail Form 1040X to the IRS, you don’t necessarily have to file it on paper.
File Form 1040X online below. This is the most convenient way to file Form 1040X as it’s going to save you plenty of time and the 1040X you’re filing will be less prone to errors. To start filling out Form 1040X in 2021, click on the boxes you want to enter your information and repeat.

Make sure to put your Form 1040X and your documents in a large envelope and mail it with the USPS. If you send your mail with a Private Delivery Service– as what the IRS defines as your 1040X may be returned back to you.

I filed my taxes and found out that I could get the back stimulus checks from 2020. How do I go about getting the funds

You can get the funds by filing an amended tax return. You will need to file Form 1040-X the same way you filed your original return, but claim the funds to get it refunded to you. You can get and learn more about Form 1040-X from here.
