While the federal tax filing deadline was postponed in 2020 and 2021, we do not expect such a thing from the Internal Revenue Service. So, the tax filing deadline is anticipated to remain the same as always – April 15. A tax extension will have you six additional months to file your federal income tax return. Although there are several ways you can file an extension other than filing Form 4868, it’s still an easy option that won’t take much of your time.

Form 4868 Fillable PDF

Like the other IRS forms, you can file Form 4868 2022 using TaxUni PDF filler. Considering the information required on Form 4868 is very simple and limited, it shouldn’t take you more than two minutes to file a copy. However, you might need to do some calculations to estimate your tax liability for the 2021 tax year. Taxpayers that owe the IRS after April 15 are subject to late-payment penalties and possible interests. Make sure that you don’t owe taxes by the time you file for an extension.

Taxpayers that owe taxes need to make a payment to pay off their tax liability. Since you’re going to pay the Internal Revenue Service, we highly suggest filing an extension online and paying taxes at the same time rather than filing Form 4868. Can I get a tax extension past April 15?

Yes, you can get an extension past April 15. That’s the point of filing for an extension. After filing for an automatic extension of time to file, you will have until October 15 to file your federal income tax return.

What is the difference between Form 4868 and Form 2350?

Form 4868 is the standard extension form whereas Form 2350 is for new expats who need more time to meet the physical presence test or the bona fide residence test to qualify for foreign earned income tax exclusion. So, if you weren’t an expat, use Form 4868 to place an extension on your tax return.

Can I file for an extension after April 15?

Unfortunately not. The Internal Revenue Service doesn’t allow taxpayers to file for an extension after April 15. However, if the tax filing deadline has already been postponed like in 2020 and 2021, you technically can file an extension after April 15 as the deadline hasn’t arrived yet. Under normal terms, however, you cannot file an extension after the filing deadline. Make sure to file your federal income tax return as soon as possible as if the filing deadline is long gone as you are subject to failure-to-file penalties and late-payment penalties, and you wouldn’t want to increase the number of penalties.
