How to Get a Maryland Sales Tax License?

Most businesses that sell taxable goods or services in Maryland must obtain a sales tax license. This is also known as a seller's permit or sales and use tax permit. Business owners can register for a sales account and use a tax account through Maryland's Combined Registration Online Application.

As a business owner operating in Maryland, you are responsible for collecting sales and use tax from your customers and passing it along to the state. If you don’t, you could face penalties and interest charges. To stay compliant, you’ll need to register your company’s tax information with the Maryland comptroller and obtain a Maryland Sales Tax License.

  • First, you’ll need to fill out the Combined Registration Online Application on the Maryland comptroller’s website. You’ll also need to register your business name with the Department of Assessments and Taxation. Once your company is registered, you can start collecting sales taxes.
  • When completing the application, ensure you provide all the necessary information. You’ll need your FEIN number, Central Registration number, and the amount of sales and use tax you collected during the period you’re reporting. Once you’ve entered all of the necessary information, click “Next.”
  • The next screen will show you the due date for your return. It’s important to note that the COM requires all businesses to file a sales tax return by the end of each assigned collection period. You must submit a zero return by phone if you haven’t collected any tax during that period. You should also be aware that Maryland applies a destination-based sales tax system, so be sure to charge the correct rate for each customer.

You must also file your returns and remit collected sales tax on time to avoid penalties. If you miss a filing deadline, the Comptroller may assess a penalty and interest on your uncollected tax. You should file electronically using the COM’s Online Service Center. Before you submit your return, review it for accuracy and make any necessary adjustments. After you have reviewed and submitted your return, you will receive a confirmation number.
